How to stream a Zoom meeting to YouTube, Facebook and more

Zoom can stream a meeting or webinar to one custom streaming service over RTMP. Make that service Upstream, and the meeting goes out to YouTube, Facebook and any other platforms you add, up to 10 at once.

This needs a paid Zoom account (Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise), a host with a Meetings or Webinars license, and the Zoom desktop app on Windows or Mac. An admin has to allow custom streaming once, and then the host can start it from any meeting.

  • Zoom Pro or higher
  • Meetings and webinars

Before you start

  • An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
  • A Zoom Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise account
  • The Zoom desktop app on Windows or Mac for the host
  • The platforms you want to go live on

Step 1

Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream

In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.

RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live
Stream Key
Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Live Studio, Source, set to RTMP. The stream key stays hidden until you press the eye icon.

Step 2

Allow custom live streaming in Zoom

A Zoom admin signs in to the Zoom web portal and opens Account Management, Account Settings. On the Meeting tab, under In Meeting (Advanced), turn on Allow livestreaming of meetings and tick Custom Live Streaming Service.

Webinars have their own switch: Webinar tab, In Webinar, Allow livestreaming. Both can also be set for a group or a single user.

Step 3

Paste the details into Zoom

During a meeting: click More, Livestream, then Live on Custom Live Streaming Service. A browser page opens. Paste the RTMP Server URL into Streaming URL and the Stream Key into Streaming key. Zoom also requires a Live streaming page URL: the public page where people watch, such as your YouTube channel.

For a scheduled meeting or webinar: on its Live Streaming tab, click Configure custom streaming. The fields are called Stream URL and Stream Key there. Set Resolution to Full HD (1080P).

Step 4

Start the stream, then go live

Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from Zoom. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.

Troubleshooting

There is no Livestream option under More

The host needs a paid Zoom account, a Meetings or Webinars license and the desktop app on Windows or Mac. Live streaming also has to be allowed in Account Settings (step 2), at account, group and user level.

Live on Custom Live Streaming Service is missing

Live streaming is allowed but the custom service isn't ticked. Under Allow livestreaming of meetings, tick Custom Live Streaming Service.

Zoom won't start without a Live streaming page URL

That field is required. Put in the page where viewers watch, for example your YouTube channel link. It is separate from the Streaming URL, which is Upstream's server address.

For connection problems that aren't specific to Zoom, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.

FAQ

What is Zoom RTMP?

It is Zoom's way of sending a meeting or webinar out as a live stream to a server of your choice, called Custom Live Streaming Service. Here that server is Upstream, which passes the stream on to your platforms.

Can I live stream Zoom for free?

Not from a free Zoom account. Custom live streaming needs a Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise account. On the Upstream side, the free plan includes 24 hours of streaming a month.

How do I stream a Zoom meeting to YouTube and Facebook at the same time?

Add both platforms to your stream in Upstream, then send the Zoom meeting to Upstream. YouTube connects by signing in, Facebook with the persistent stream key from Live Producer.
