Set up XSplit Broadcaster to multistream with Upstream
XSplit Broadcaster sends its stream to Upstream through a Custom RTMP output, and Upstream copies it to up to 10 platforms. The server address and the stream key go in separate fields.
Check your XSplit license first. The Free license is for personal use, adds a watermark above 720p or above 30 fps, and doesn't include streaming to several platforms at once. For a 1080p multistream, use XSplit Premium.
- XSplit Broadcaster for Windows
- Premium license recommended
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- XSplit Broadcaster on a Windows PC, ideally with a Premium license
- The platforms you want to go live on
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Add Upstream as an output in XSplit
In XSplit Broadcaster, open Broadcast, choose Set up a new output and pick Custom RTMP. Type Upstream as the Name, paste the RTMP Server URL into RTMP URL and the Stream Key into Stream Key, then click OK.
To go live later, open Broadcast and click the Upstream output.
Step 3
Set the video encoding
The output's Properties window has Video Encoding. The gear next to it opens Video Encoding Setup, where Video FPS and Video Size start out matching your current stage, so check them:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Codec | H.264 The video format Upstream takes in. |
| Video FPS | 30 Use 60 fps when your Upstream stream is set to 60 fps on a plan that includes it. A stream set to 30 fps still sends 30 fps. |
| Video Size | 1920x1080 1080p is a starting point. Upstream input follows the resolution selected on your stream, up to 4K on a plan that includes it. On the Free license, 1080p is watermarked. |
Each platform also caps bitrate and stream length on its side. See the live streaming limits for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and more.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from XSplit. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Troubleshooting
My 1080p stream has an XSplit watermark
The Free license watermarks anything above 720p or above 30 fps. XSplit Premium removes it. Your Upstream plan doesn't change XSplit's watermark.
I added the output but nothing is streaming
Creating the output doesn't start it. Open Broadcast and click the Upstream output. If Upstream still says Not connected, check that the URL and key are in their own fields.
For connection problems that aren't specific to XSplit, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
