How to multistream from Meld Studio
Meld Studio has a Custom RTMP output built in, so multistreaming takes no plugin. Point the output at Upstream and Upstream copies the stream to every platform you add, up to 10 at once.
Two Meld details matter here. A new output stays off until you switch it on in the Outputs panel. And each output sends either the Main canvas or the Portrait canvas, so decide which shape your platforms need before you go live.
- Meld Studio for Windows or Mac
- No plugin
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- Meld Studio on Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 or later
- The platforms you want to go live on
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Add Upstream as an output in Meld
In Meld Studio, open Settings, General, Stream settings and click Add output. Choose Custom RTMP, paste the RTMP Server URL into Stream Server and the Stream Key into Stream Key.
Then switch the output on in the Outputs panel. Meld only sends to outputs that are on when you press Go Live.
Step 3
Set the canvas and frame rate
Under Settings, General, set these before going live. Meld locks its stream settings once you are live.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Canvas | 1080p The largest picture Upstream takes in. Meld's default. |
| Framerate | 30 Upstream converts 60 fps to 30. |
Each platform also caps bitrate and stream length on its side. See the live streaming limits for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and more.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from Meld Studio. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Main canvas or Portrait canvas?
Each Meld output sends one canvas: Main (landscape) or Portrait. An Upstream stream also has one shape, set under Resolution & Orientation, and every platform on it gets that shape.
For YouTube, Twitch and Kick, send the Main canvas. For TikTok or Instagram, send the Portrait canvas to a stream set to 1080p (Vertical), since a landscape picture shows up small or cropped on a phone held upright. To do both, run two Upstream streams, one per shape (paid plans can run more than one stream at a time).
Troubleshooting
I added the output but Meld isn't sending anything
New outputs start switched off. Turn it on in the Outputs panel, start the stream in Upstream, then press Go Live in Meld.
I can't change the canvas or frame rate
Meld locks its stream settings while you are live. Stop the broadcast, change them under Settings, General, and go live again.
For connection problems that aren't specific to Meld Studio, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
FAQ
Do I need a plugin to multistream from Meld Studio?
No. The Custom RTMP output is built in. Send it to Upstream and add your platforms there.
Is Meld Studio free?
Yes. Meld Studio is free; its paid tiers are for Meld Spark overlays. Upstream's free plan includes 24 hours of streaming a month to up to 10 platforms.
How do I add TikTok to Meld Studio?
Add TikTok in Upstream as Other (Custom RTMP), with the server URL and key TikTok shows under Go LIVE on a computer. TikTok decides which accounts get a key. Send Meld's Portrait canvas so it fills the screen.
