How to set up ATEM Mini Pro streaming with Upstream
The ATEM Mini Pro and Extreme stream over Ethernet on their own, but ATEM Software Control only lists the services it knows, like YouTube and Twitch. To add Upstream, you load a small streaming XML file once. After that, Upstream sits in the Platform menu like any other service, and Upstream sends the stream on to up to 10 platforms.
The XML file holds Upstream's server address. Your stream key stays out of the file: you paste it into ATEM Software Control afterwards, so the file is safe to keep and reuse.
- ATEM Mini Pro, Pro ISO, Extreme, Extreme ISO
- No computer needed once set up
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- An ATEM Mini Pro, Pro ISO, Extreme or Extreme ISO with ATEM Software Control
- The platforms you want to go live on
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Save the Upstream XML file
Copy this into a text editor and save it as upstream.xml. It holds the server address, not your key.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<streaming>
<service>
<name>Upstream</name>
<servers>
<server>
<name>Default</name>
<url>rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live</url>
</server>
</servers>
<profiles>
<profile>
<name>Streaming High</name>
<config resolution="1080p" fps="30">
<bitrate>6000000</bitrate>
</config>
</profile>
</profiles>
</service>
</streaming>Step 3
Load it and paste your key
In ATEM Software Control, open the Stream menu at the top of the screen and choose Load Streaming Settings. Pick upstream.xml, and Upstream appears in the Platform menu.
On the Output tab, in Live Stream, set Platform to Upstream, Server to Default, paste the Stream Key into Key and set Quality to Streaming High. Click On Air once the Upstream stream is started.
Set the video standard to 1080p30. The stream resolution follows the switcher's video standard, set in ATEM Software Control's settings. Upstream takes in up to 1080p at 30 fps.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the ATEM Mini. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
What the streaming XML file does
The file adds a service to the Platform menu. It doesn't start anything. Its service name ("Upstream") becomes the Platform choice and its server name ("Default") becomes the Server choice. The profiles part is required, and the number 6000000 is the bitrate in bits per second, so 6 Mb/s.
Load it with Load Streaming Settings rather than editing the Streaming.xml file that ships with the software. That older forum trick works, but software updates overwrite the file and your changes with it.
Troubleshooting
Upstream doesn't appear in the Platform menu
Load the file with Stream, Load Streaming Settings, then look in Output, Live Stream. Make sure it was saved as plain text with the .xml ending, and copied whole, including the profiles part.
The stream uses far more bandwidth than expected
Check that Quality is a Streaming preset, not a HyperDeck one. HyperDeck presets run from 12 to 70 Mb/s and are meant for recording. At 30p, Streaming High is about 6 Mb/s and Streaming Medium about 4.5.
For connection problems that aren't specific to the ATEM Mini, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
FAQ
Can an ATEM Mini Pro stream to several platforms at once?
Not by itself: it sends one stream to one service. Make that service Upstream, and Upstream sends it to up to 10 platforms.
How do I change the bitrate on an ATEM Mini Pro?
Pick a different Quality in Output, Live Stream. At 30p, Streaming High is about 6 Mb/s, Streaming Medium about 4.5 and Streaming Low about 3.
Does the ATEM Mini need a computer to stream?
Only for this setup. After that, the ATEM Mini Pro and Extreme stream over Ethernet on their own.
Checked against ATEM Mini manual, Blackmagic streaming XML format and the Upstream app, October 2026.
