How to live stream an Osmo Pocket 3 or DJI drone through Upstream
DJI's apps can live stream an Osmo camera or a drone to an RTMP address. Point that address at Upstream, and Upstream copies the stream to up to 10 platforms while your phone or camera uploads only one.
For an Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action, the setup is in DJI Mimo, and the camera joins Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot itself. For a drone it is in DJI Fly, and whether you can stream at all depends on your controller. The original Osmo Pocket and the Osmo Mobile gimbals don't support this.
- Osmo Pocket 3, Osmo Action, DJI drones
- Controller matters for drones
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- An Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action with DJI Mimo 1.2.20 or later, or a DJI drone with DJI Fly 1.4.12 or later
- Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot with a good upload
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Build the RTMP address
DJI's apps take the server and the key in one field. Join them with a slash:
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live/ followed by your Stream Key.
Step 3
Set up the stream in the DJI app
Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action (DJI Mimo): connect the camera and open Live Stream, then RTMP. Choose Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot (on iPhone, type the network name and password), paste the full address and pick 1080p at 3 or 6 Mbps. Tap Start Live Stream once the Upstream stream is started.
DJI drones (DJI Fly): in GO FLY, open Transmission, Live Streaming Platforms and choose RTMP. Paste the full address into RTMP Address, check Livestream Resolution and Livestream Bitrate, then tap Start.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the DJI app. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Drones: check the controller first
The basic DJI RC can't live stream through DJI Fly. The DJI RC 2 and RC Pro 2 stream at up to 720p, and so does the DJI RC Pro after DJI Fly 1.18.0. Since DJI Fly 1.16.0, the RC 2, RC Pro and Smart Controller also need a microphone plugged in to stream.
Controllers that use your phone, the RC-N1, RC-N2 and RC-N3, support RTMP streaming. DJI doesn't list supported drones one by one, so a supported controller alone doesn't confirm your aircraft.
Troubleshooting
DJI Fly won't start the live stream
Check the controller and microphone before the address. The basic DJI RC can't stream, and since DJI Fly 1.16.0 the RC 2, RC Pro and Smart Controller need a microphone plugged in.
My Osmo never reaches Upstream
The camera uploads over its own Wi-Fi or hotspot connection, so check that first. Then check the
address: it has to end with your stream key after /live/.
My drone stream is stuck at 720p
The RC 2 and RC Pro 2 cap streaming at 720p, and the RC Pro does too after DJI Fly 1.18.0. Upstream can't add detail the drone doesn't send.
For connection problems that aren't specific to the DJI app, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
FAQ
Can the Osmo Pocket 3 live stream?
Yes, through DJI Mimo. Choose RTMP to send it to Upstream, at 1080p and 3 or 6 Mbps. The Pocket 3 streams at 30 fps.
Can I stream an Osmo Pocket 3 to TikTok?
Yes, through Upstream, if TikTok has given your account a stream key. Add TikTok in Upstream as Other (Custom RTMP). TikTok viewers watch upright, so think about the shape.
