How to connect a Blackmagic Web Presenter HD or 4K to Upstream

Unlike the ATEM Mini, the Blackmagic Web Presenter has a custom URL option built in, so you type Upstream's address straight into its setup utility. No XML file needed. It streams on its own, and Upstream sends the stream on to up to 10 platforms.

These steps cover the Web Presenter HD and 4K and the Streaming Encoder HD and 4K, which use the same software. On the 4K models, pick the H.264 version of the custom URL option, since Upstream takes in H.264, and set the stream to 1080p30.

  • Web Presenter HD and 4K, Streaming Encoder
  • No XML file needed

Before you start

  • An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
  • A Web Presenter HD or 4K, or a Streaming Encoder, and its setup utility
  • The platforms you want to go live on

Step 1

Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream

In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.

RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live
Stream Key
Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Live Studio, Source, set to RTMP. The stream key stays hidden until you press the eye icon.

Step 2

Paste the details into the setup utility

Connect the Web Presenter over USB-C or the network and open its setup utility: Blackmagic Web Presenter Setup, or Blackmagic Streaming Setup in newer versions. Click the setup icon and open the Live Stream tab.

Under Platform, pick the custom URL option for H.264. The Server field becomes editable: paste the RTMP Server URL there and the Stream Key into Key. Click On Air once the Upstream stream is started.

Step 3

Set the quality and standard

Still on the Live Stream tab:

Recommended output settings for Upstream
SettingValue
QualityStreaming High Blackmagic's standard streaming preset.
Stream Standard1080p30 Use 1080p30 as a starting point. The input follows the resolution and frame rate selected on your Upstream stream, up to 4K and 60 fps on plans that include them.

Each platform also caps bitrate and stream length on its side. See the live streaming limits for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and more.

Step 4

Start the stream, then go live

Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the Web Presenter. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.

Troubleshooting

I can't type in the Server field

Server only becomes editable once Platform is set to a custom URL option. Pick the H.264 one.

The 4K model is On Air but Upstream gets no picture

The 4K models also offer a custom URL option for H.265. Switch to the H.264 one, which is what Upstream takes in, then check that the key is still in Key.

For connection problems that aren't specific to the Web Presenter, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.

FAQ

Do I need a streaming XML file for the Web Presenter?

No. The custom URL option takes Upstream's address directly. Loading streaming XML is another way to add services, but not required here.

Can a Web Presenter 4K stream 4K through Upstream?

Yes. Set Stream Standard to 4K and set your Upstream stream to 4K on a plan that includes it. Match the frame rate too; 60 fps needs a plan that includes 60 fps.

Checked against Web Presenter manual, Blackmagic Streaming manual and the Upstream app, October 2026.
