How to live stream a GoPro through Quik and Upstream
A GoPro can live stream through the Quik app's RTMP option, and you don't need a GoPro subscription for it. Point it at Upstream and the stream reaches YouTube, Twitch and up to 10 platforms at once, instead of one.
It works on the HERO7 Black and newer, including the HERO12 Black and HERO13 Black, but not on the MAX2, the Lit HERO or the HERO (2024). The camera uploads over Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot, at 480p, 720p or 1080p.
- HERO7 Black and newer, most models
- No GoPro subscription
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- A GoPro HERO7 Black or newer (not MAX2, Lit HERO or HERO (2024)) and the Quik app
- Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot for the camera
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Set up an RTMP live stream in Quik
Quik takes the server and the key in one field. Join them with a slash: rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live/ followed by your Stream Key.
In Quik, pick your camera, open the menu and choose Live Stream, then RTMP. Connect the camera to Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot, paste the full address, choose 1080p and tap Set Up Live Stream. Once the Upstream stream is started, tap Go LIVE.
Step 3
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the GoPro Quik app. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Troubleshooting
I can't find RTMP in Quik
Check your camera is supported first. Older versions of Quik put it under Control Your GoPro, Live, Set Up Live, and newer ones under Live Stream. Both lead to RTMP.
The stream gets blurry on a weak signal
The GoPro lowers its bitrate on its own when the signal drops, and Quik has no bitrate setting. Try 720p, or move closer to the Wi-Fi or hotspot.
Upstream says Not connected
The address has to include the key after /live/. A server address on its own won't connect.
For connection problems that aren't specific to the GoPro Quik app, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
