Send a YoloBox live stream to Upstream
A YoloBox sends its live event to Upstream as a custom RTMP destination, and Upstream copies it to up to 10 platforms. The box then uploads one stream over its connection, which matters most on mobile data.
How you add the destination depends on the model and firmware. Some let you type the details on the box, others email you a form, and the YoloCast dashboard works for all of them. Custom RTMP destinations are free on YoloBox.
- YoloBox Pro, Ultra or Mini
- Custom RTMP is free
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- A YoloBox Pro, Ultra or Mini
- The platforms you want to go live on
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Add Upstream as an RTMP destination
On the YoloBox: open your live event, tap + where the platforms are listed and choose RTMP (RTMP(S) on older firmware). If you see Fill in manually, paste the RTMP Server URL into Server URL and the Stream Key into Stream Key. Otherwise choose Send the link and fill in the form that arrives by email.
Or in the YoloCast dashboard: go to Destination, Add Platform, choose RTMP and fill in the same two fields. It shows up on the box on its own.
Switch the destination on: it turns red and shows Ready. Tap Go Live once the Upstream stream is started.
Step 3
Set the stream encoding
In the YoloBox stream encoding settings, pick H.264 rather than H.265, then:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1080P 1080p is a starting point. Upstream input follows the resolution selected on your stream, up to 4K on a plan that includes it. |
| FPS | 30 Or 60 if your Upstream stream is set to 60 fps (paid plans). Otherwise Upstream converts 60 to 30. |
| Bitrate | 4 Mbps YoloLiv's suggestion for 1080p at 30 fps. |
Each platform also caps bitrate and stream length on its side. See the live streaming limits for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and more.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the YoloBox. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Troubleshooting
There is no Fill in manually option
Use Send the link and check the email for your YoloLiv account, or add the destination in the YoloCast dashboard under Destination, Add Platform.
The YoloBox goes live but Upstream gets nothing
Check that the server URL and key aren't swapped, that neither has a stray space, and that the
address starts with rtmp://. YoloLiv notes these mistakes can fail without an error.
Also make sure the codec is H.264.
My RTMP destination wasn't included when I went live
Adding a destination doesn't select it. Switch it on in the event until it turns red and shows Ready, then go live.
For connection problems that aren't specific to the YoloBox, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
FAQ
Do I need YoloCast to stream to Upstream?
No. The YoloBox can send straight to Upstream. YoloCast is only an easier place to type in the destination.
Can I stream a YoloBox to TikTok?
Yes, if TikTok has given your account a stream key. Add TikTok in Upstream as Other (Custom RTMP). TikTok viewers watch upright, so a landscape picture shows up small.
