How to multistream from Ecamm Live with RTMP
Ecamm Live, now just called Ecamm, can send your broadcast to any RTMP server. Add Upstream as an RTMP destination, and Upstream copies the stream to the platforms you add, up to 10 at once.
Ecamm keeps output settings simple: you pick a video size and frame rate, and Ecamm handles the bitrate. Choose 1080p at 30 fps for Upstream. Ecamm's free trial adds a watermark, so check your plan before a public show.
- Ecamm for Mac
- One output, up to 10 platforms
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- Ecamm on a Mac
- The platforms you want to go live on
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Add Upstream as a destination in Ecamm
In Ecamm, open Preferences, Destinations and click Add New Destination.... Choose RTMP, paste the RTMP Server URL into Server URL and the Stream Key into Stream Key. Leave Provide Login and Password unticked.
You can also add it while setting up a show: with Streaming on in the Mode menu, click New, then + Add and Add New Destination. Go live with Go Live Now.
Step 3
Set the video size
Open Preferences, Shape & Size. Ecamm has no bitrate or keyframe fields, only Use Reduced Bitrate for slow connections.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Video Size | 1080p The largest picture Upstream takes in. 1440p and 4K are scaled down. |
| Frame Rate | 30 Upstream converts 60 fps to 30. |
Each platform also caps bitrate and stream length on its side. See the live streaming limits for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and more.
Step 4
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from Ecamm. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
Ecamm can multistream too. Why use Upstream?
Ecamm Standard multistreams to up to 10 destinations by itself, so Upstream isn't required. The difference is where the copies come from. With Ecamm's own multistreaming, your Mac uploads the show to each destination. With Upstream, it uploads one stream and Upstream makes the copies in the cloud.
That matters on a slow or busy connection. It also means your platforms, schedules and 24/7 playlists live in one place in Upstream, even when Ecamm is closed.
Troubleshooting
Ecamm says "Unable To Start Streaming"
Ecamm shows "An unknown error occurred" when the network blocks port 1935, which RTMP uses. Upstream's server address uses that port. On a work, school or hotel network, ask for port 1935 to be opened or try another connection.
I can't find a bitrate setting
Ecamm doesn't have one. It picks the bitrate from the video size. If your upload struggles, tick Use Reduced Bitrate under Shape & Size.
For connection problems that aren't specific to Ecamm, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
