How to live stream an Insta360 X4 or X5 over RTMP
The Insta360 app can live stream an X4 or X5 over RTMP, either as a wide 360 picture (Live) or as a portrait shot it frames for you (Reframe Live). Point it at Upstream and Upstream sends the stream to up to 10 platforms.
The camera has to be in 360° mode, not single-lens mode. An X4 also needs camera firmware 1.2.21 or later and app 1.68.0 or later. The Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2 only stream to YouTube, so they can't use this.
- Insta360 X4 or X5
- 360 or reframed
Before you start
- An Upstream account (the free plan is enough to test)
- An Insta360 X4 (firmware 1.2.21 or later, app 1.68.0 or later) or X5
- A phone with mobile data or Wi-Fi
Step 1
Get your server URL and stream key from Upstream
In Upstream, press Create stream, choose Multistream from OBS (it works for any RTMP app or device) and add your platforms, up to 10. The stream opens in Live Studio with the RTMP input on. For a stream you already have, open Live Studio, Source and set Live Source to RTMP.
- RTMP Server URL
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live- Stream Key
- Unique to each stream. Copy it from Upstream and keep it private.
Step 2
Start an RTMP live stream in the Insta360 app
The app takes the server and the key in one field. Join them with a slash:
rtmp://ingest.upstream.so:1935/live/ followed by your Stream Key.
Connect the camera and open the shooting preview. Select 360°, tap ≡ at the bottom right and choose Live or Reframe Live, then RTMP. Paste the full address into Streaming Address and pick a size. Tap Start Live once the Upstream stream is started.
Step 3
Start the stream, then go live
Start the stream in Upstream first, then start streaming from the Insta360 app. Live Studio switches from Not connected to Excellent, Good or Poor connection when the feed arrives, and Upstream sends it to every platform on the stream.
The "1080" option isn't 1920x1080
In Live, the 1080 option sends 2160x1080. Choose 960 for a 1920x960 feed that fits a landscape 1080p stream. In Reframe Live, 1080 sends a tall 1080x1920 picture and 720 sends 720x1280. Both modes stream at 30 fps, with bitrates of 2, 4, 6 or 8 Mbps.
For Reframe Live's portrait picture, set the Upstream stream to a vertical shape under Resolution & Orientation, which suits TikTok and Instagram. A 1080x1920 feed arrives at full size, including on the free plan. Upstream sends a regular video, so check how your platforms show a 360 picture before relying on it.
Troubleshooting
I can't find Live on my X4
Switch the camera to 360° mode, and update to camera firmware 1.2.21 and app 1.68.0 or later. Then look under ≡ in the shooting preview.
The iPhone connects to the camera but nothing uploads
On iPhone, the camera uses the phone's Wi-Fi, so the stream goes out over mobile data. Check that mobile data works and has signal.
For connection problems that aren't specific to the Insta360 app, such as Not connected, a poor connection or a leaked key, see the full RTMP troubleshooting list.
FAQ
Can the Insta360 X5 live stream?
Yes. Put it in 360° mode, choose Live or Reframe Live and select RTMP, then paste the combined Upstream address into Streaming Address.
Does the Insta360 Ace Pro support RTMP?
No. Insta360 lists YouTube as the only streaming option for the Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2, so they can't send to Upstream.
