YouTube thumbnail guide
Build a thumbnail that communicates one clear idea
A useful thumbnail is understandable before someone reads the title. Start with the video's main promise, choose a background that supports it, and keep the headline short enough to scan at a small size. The template gives you structure; your subject, wording, and contrast should make the final design specific to the video.
Start with hierarchy
Pick one focal subject and one short message. Make the important element large, keep secondary decoration quieter, and check that text separates clearly from the background. More elements do not automatically create more interest.
Match the video honestly
Use a frame, person, object, or result that viewers will actually encounter. The thumbnail can create curiosity, but it should not imply a guest, outcome, or event that never appears in the video.
Export for the workflow you need
Download PNG or JPEG at 1280 by 720, Full HD, or 4K. A standard export is convenient for a normal upload; the larger versions give you more room when the design will also be reused in other promotional assets.
Review at a small size
- Zoom out and confirm the subject and headline are still easy to identify.
- Check contrast, spelling, cropping, and safe space around the edges.
- Compare the thumbnail with the title so they add context instead of repeating each other.
Your source images stay local
Editing, optional portrait background removal, and export run in your browser. Your uploaded photos are not sent to Upstream. The tool may load the editor and background-removal model files it needs, but your image content stays on this device.
