How to extract audio from a video

  1. 1

    Add your video

Drop in an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or M4V file, or choose one from your device.

  2. 2

    Pick the format

Original quality copies the audio track as it is, which is instant and lossless. MP3, WAV and M4A convert it, and Custom quality lets you set the bitrate, sample rate and channels.

  3. 3

    Download the audio

Listen to the result on the page, then save the file.

Why use this extract audio from video

Private by design

The file is processed inside your browser. It is never uploaded to Upstream or anyone else.

Free, with no watermark

No account, no trial and nothing stamped on your audio. Use it as often as you like.

Fast on your own device

There is no upload or queue. Processing starts right away and uses your computer, not a server.

Works with common formats

Start from MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, M4V files and save as MP3, WAV or M4A.

Popular uses

  • Keep the soundtrack of a stream recording or interview.
  • Get a voice track to edit, transcribe or turn into a podcast.
  • Save music or sound from your own videos without re-encoding.

Extract audio from MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM

With Original quality the sound is copied out of the video exactly as it is: no encoding, no quality loss, and done in seconds even for a two hour recording. MP4 and MOV files usually give an M4A file, WebM gives Opus, and MKV gives whatever the file holds.

Pick MP3 when you need the file to play everywhere, WAV for editing in a DAW or a video editor, or M4A for Apple devices and podcast apps. Custom quality sets the bitrate, the sample rate and mono or stereo.

What to do with the audio

Pull the sound from a live stream recording to publish it as a podcast, keep a talk or a sermon as audio only, or save the music from your own video to reuse it. Music channels can take it further and run their tracks as a live radio: Upstream plays an audio playlist 24/7 over a picture or a video loop, with the computer off. The lofi radio guide shows how.

FAQ

Extract Audio from Video FAQ

Files, privacy, formats and limits.

Not with Original quality. It copies the audio track out of the video exactly as it is, without re-encoding, so nothing is lost and it takes seconds even for long videos. MP3 and M4A are re-encoded at a high quality setting, or at the bitrate you pick under Custom quality, and WAV is uncompressed.

The format the audio already has inside the video. Most MP4 and MOV files contain AAC audio, which you get as an M4A file. WebM files usually contain Opus audio, saved as .opus. If the audio can't be copied as it is, it is converted to M4A.

Yes, when you pick MP3, WAV or M4A. Open Custom quality to choose a bitrate from 96 to 320 kbps for MP3 or M4A, a sample rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz, and stereo or mono. Original quality copies the track as it is, so it has no settings.

No. The audio is extracted in your browser, so the video never leaves your device.

This tool works with video files on your device. To use audio from your own YouTube video, download the original from YouTube Studio first, then add it here.

Original quality for the best sound and speed. MP3 plays everywhere and keeps files small. WAV is best for editing in a DAW or video editor. M4A is a good choice for Apple devices and podcast tools.

Add the MP4, leave the format on Original quality and download. Most MP4 files hold AAC sound, so you get an M4A file with exactly the same sound, in a few seconds. Pick MP3 instead if the player or editor you use needs an MP3.

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the phone, pick the video from your photos or files, and download the audio. Long videos take longer on a phone than on a computer.

Yes. It is completely free, with no account and no limit on how many files you process. Downloads carry no watermark.

No. The tool runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your file is read into memory on your device, processed there, and the result is saved straight to your downloads.

You can start with MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, M4V files. You can save the result in its original format, or as MP3, WAV or M4A.

There is no fixed limit, but the file has to fit in your browser's memory. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work well on most computers. For very large files, use a desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Yes, on modern iPhone and Android browsers. Processing is slower on a phone than on a computer, so shorter files work best there.
