How to test your microphone
- 1
Start the test
Press Start mic test and allow microphone access. Pick the right mic if you have more than one.
- 2
Speak normally
Talk at your usual distance and volume. The verdict tells you if the level is too quiet, good or clipping.
- 3
Record and listen
Record 10 seconds and play it back with headphones to hear exactly what your audience will hear.
Fix common microphone problems
No sound at all
Check the mute switch on the mic or headset and pick the right device in the list. Make sure no other app, such as Zoom or OBS, is holding the mic, then start the test again.
Too quiet
Move the mic closer to your mouth, about a hand's width for most headsets and 10 to 20 cm for a desk mic. Then raise the input level in your system sound settings.
Distorted or clipping
If the meter hits the top, the sound is clipping. Lower the input gain on the mic, interface or system settings, and speak slightly off-axis to soften plosives.
Background noise or echo
Close windows, turn off fans and add soft furnishings to reduce room echo. Try the browser processing switch to compare, and use headphones so speakers do not feed back into the mic.
